Trying New Things with Tunas
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Eduardo introduced some of the youth he mentors to tuna fruit, known in English as prickly pear or cactus fruit. He shared what makes the fruit unique: from its prickly ‘splinters’ on the outside to its subtly sweet flavor and even its presence on the Mexican flag. Youth enjoyed getting to wear gloves to handle the fruit, seeing for themselves how tiny the spines on the skin are and how easily they could get into your skin! Once peeled, they carefully cut the fruit and tried a small piece. Eduardo shared that he enjoys both the green and red varieties, but that he likes the flavor of the green the best. Not every youth loved the taste and texture of the tuna, but we are proud of them for learning and trying something new!
