Mental Health Matters: Now More Than Ever

Recent funding cuts to Idaho’s Medicaid mental healthcare programs have sent shockwaves through communities across the state. The reductions, which took effect December 1 of 2025, have raised serious concerns among mental health providers, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies about access to care, public safety, and even increased incarceration. As courts have declined requests to pause or reverse the cuts, many Idahoans are left facing uncertainty about whether critical mental health services will remain available when they are most needed.

At Friends of the Children – Eastern Idaho, we know that mental health support is not optional, it is foundational. Many of the children and families we serve have experienced significant adversity and trauma. Our long-term, professional mentoring model intentionally integrates mental health support by ensuring youth have access to consistent, relationship-based care and building partnerships with licensed mental health professionals. Professional mentors work alongside mental health providers to help youth build emotional regulation, resilience, coping skills, and a sense of safety, all key building blocks for healthy development.

This support is essential to both intermediate and long-term outcomes. When mental health needs are addressed early and consistently, youth are better able to succeed in school, form positive relationships, avoid involvement with the justice system, and develop the skills needed for employment and independence in adulthood. Without access to care, challenges compound, ultimately affecting not only individual children, but families and entire communities.

As Idaho navigates these funding cuts, our commitment remains unchanged. We will continue to advocate for mental health resources and provide holistic, wraparound support for the children we serve. Because strong mental health today shapes safer, healthier, and more hopeful futures tomorrow.
