Building Core Assets During Clubhouse Movie Night

What started as a fun clubhouse movie night recently turned into an inspiring display of leadership, empathy, and teamwork.

After school, a group of youth gathered in the clubhouse theater that professional mentor Eduardo had set up for the event — complete with popcorn, juice boxes, and a cozy viewing area. Many of the children chose to add a dash of Valentina hot sauce to their popcorn for extra flavor! The group of children, Eduardo, and Vannesa, our Program Director, all laughed their way through the Minecraft Movie, enjoying the fun and silliness of the characters together.

As the movie neared its end, two of the youth began to lose focus and their high-energy play turned tense. Eduardo calmly stepped in, helping them de-escalate and safely taking them home for the evening.

Meanwhile, the remaining youth stayed behind with our Vannesa, to finish the movie and clean up. Seeing that it might take the staff a long time to get the clubhouse changed back from ‘movie night mode’, one young boy took the initiative and encouraged their friends to pitch in, even offering a small treat reward as motivation. Together, the group quickly restored the clubhouse, turning what could have been a stressful or tedious experience into an opportunity to lead, support, and self-regulate.

Eduardo later expressed deep appreciation to the group for their maturity and teamwork. He reminded them that by working together and managing their emotions, they had built important life skills — self-management and determination.

Before heading home, the group was treated to a small piece of chocolate — a simple thank-you for a big accomplishment.

What began as movie night ended as something much more: a powerful example of how mentorship and shared responsibility help youth grow into confident, capable leaders.
